  49. Well, I was overtaken by enthusiasm, actually, there's nothing I
  50. want to run for. Oh well.
  51.  
  52. In this issue I've included a news release by someone running for U.S.
  53. Congress, knowing that it's mainly of local interest, and obviously
  54. U.S.-only. For a couple of reasons.
  55.  
  56. One, I know Glen Tenney; he's the person behind (amongst other things)
  57. the annual Hackers Convention. He works hard, a good organizer
  58. (including knowing when to not mess), and a non-control freak. Utmost
  59. technical talent combined with a good grasp of social realities (an
  60. all too rare combination).
  61.  
  62. Two, his ideas, particularly how he would connect to the less than
  63. wholesome political landscape, are worth looking at. This is what's
  64. possible, and not just beneficial to us techies.
  65.  
  66. Lastly, it's reasonably short, and there aren't any humongous articles
  67. this week to compete with.
  68.  
  69. If nothing else, you should bug your local hired thugs about the stuff
  70. Glenney is more than willing to address. Make those worthless
  71. #)$_(_*$#% earn their graft!

  118. MARCH 6, 1992, SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA: Progress begins with initiative, a
  119. coming together of a vision and the will to accomplish great things.
  120. Silicon Valley entrepreneurs know this very well. For too long, career
  121. politicians have laid barriers in the way of people working to build a
  122. humane, viable future with the tools that technology has given them.
  123. When the people have asked for widespread access to telecommunications,
  124. computing power, and education, old-school politicians have pointed to
  125. the necessity for defense spending instead of making investments in the
  126. future. That's why I'm announcing my candidacy for the U.S. House of
  127. Representatives in the reapportioned twelfth Congressional District of
  128. California. My district covers most of the area from San Mateo up to
  129. Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. As a Democrat, I will be challenging
  130. our twelve year incumbent in the June Primary.
  131.  
  132. A few weeks ago I asked Congressman Tom Lantos' staff how he voted last
  133. year. Their initial response was to hand me the glossy advertising
  134. brochure that our tax dollars paid for. When pressed to find out how he
  135. voted, or didn't vote, I was ushered into their library, shown to the
  136. Congressional Record, and told to look it up myself day by day. This is
  137. how my representative, from one of the most technologically advanced
  138. districts, brings information to his constituents. Career politicians
  139. have remained dedicated to high defense spending while the real tools
  140. needed for worldwide economic competition are lying dormant. We need to
  141. encourage the young, trained minds of our country, and to provide the
  142. communications power to unleash that talent.

  147. Every day we are faced with non-technical problems such as health
  148. insurance, jobs, and our economy, but I feel very strongly that our
  149. country needs to look at the future of technology: how it can be used or
  150. abused, and how it is abusing all of us. Technology is advancing far
  151. faster than our laws can cope, which raises many legal, sociological,
  152. ethical, and constitutional questions. Answering these questions
  153. requires both an understanding of the technology and actual experiences
  154. with the technology.
  155.  
  156. Our greatest resources for the future are our children and our world.
  157. Our country needs to take a proactive role in producing the best
  158. educated future generation that we can, as well as having a place for
  159. that generation to live and be productive. We need to find innovative
  160. and creative ways to put technology to work for our future rather than
  161. putting up legislative roadblocks to the future. Providing the
  162. information and education we and our children need to be competitive in
  163. the future is coupled to our economy. We can't be productive today, nor
  164. can our children compete in the future, without information and
  165. education. We must plan for the twenty-first century today.
  166.  
  167. We are faced with a society of economic haves and have-nots. Most of us
  168. actively involved with technology and information access know that
  169. information is power. We are fast becoming a nation of information
  170. "knows" and "know-nots", and those who do not have the information will
  171. be in an even more devastating position than those who are just
  172. economically disadvantaged. Our government itself works to keep
  173. information unavailable to us. We need to bring information to the
  174. people, and get information from the people to our elected officials.
  175. This will help bring the power back to the people. You can be an elected
  176. official without being a career politician, but you can't legislate
  177. technological issues unless you understand the technology. We need
  178. elected officials who are online and accessible, and with whom
  179. information flows -- to them and from them as a dialogue.
  180.  
  181. One of the problems of our political system is that it takes money to
  182. win. Too often these funds come from Political Action Committees. The
  183. traditional view has been that campaign funding is spent to "get the
  184. message out". The online community finally has a chance to use this new
  185. medium to not only get a message out, but to discuss the issues without
  186. spending obscene amounts of money. Let's use my campaign as a
  187. demonstration of the power of online politics. Pass this release and my
  188. platform on to your friends and colleagues, and around your town. Even
  189. though California's twelfth Congressional District covers the area from
  190. San Mateo up to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, these issues need to
  191. be discussed online and in the media nationwide. We of the online
  192. community are currently an under-represented constituency. Let's change
  193. that. Let's get Congress online.

  213. Congressional Candidate Glenn Tenney's Platform For Our Future
  214.  
  215.  MARCH 6, 1992, SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA: Most candidates look like every
  216. other candidate on most issues. I am differentiated on high-tech issues.
  217. Here's how I feel about a few traditional and technological issues:
  218.  
  219. * We need to be competitive in the "global village" world economy, to
  220. focus on America without being protectionist. Education and information
  221. are keys to achieving these goals.
  222.  
  223. * Our country, from the top down, needs to look years into the future
  224. instead of just months. Our country and our businesses also need to
  225. understand that our people are our major asset for the future. We must
  226. rescue our environment to have a future.
  227.  
  228. * Being in business for myself, not being wealthy, and having raised
  229. five boys means that my wife and I live the health care problem daily. A
  230. tax credit next year doesnUt help us pay our insurance premium next
  231. month, let alone help us find insurance. Our country must commit to
  232. defining and providing a minimal level of health care to everyone.
  233.  
  234. * When my wife and I decided to become parents we fortunately had access
  235. to all the information and options, and had the right to a choice. I am
  236. pro-family and pro-choice.
  237.  
  238. * Recent events in what was the Soviet Union offers us the opportunity
  239. of our lifetime to take dramatic steps towards world peace, and a true
  240. peace-time economy. We must significantly reduce our defense budget
  241. while helping defense businesses and their workers transition to non-
  242. defense ventures. Our country's enormous supply of talent currently
  243. committed to defense-related projects can be put to effective and
  244. innovative use in solving many other problems. We can do this and
  245. maintain defensive strength.
  246.  
  247. * We must encourage businesses to invest in our future both by reducing
  248. long term capital gains taxes (for capital that is actually a long term
  249. investment in our future) and providing tax incentives for research and
  250. development. Having participated in chip designs, and seeing how
  251. biotechnology is progressing, I know that many innovations require a
  252. large long-term capital investment.

  257. * There are tremendous changes waiting to happen if only we can provide
  258. high-speed computer and data networks between our universities, public
  259. schools (K-12) and homes. We need to take steps to wire our country for
  260. Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) or 'fiber to the home.'
  261. Affordable ubiquitous networked computing will have an effect that can
  262. hardly be imagined by those outside of the field.
  263.  
  264. * Most people get their news from television. About two- thirds of our
  265. homes receive that news on cable TV, yet only a small number of
  266. companies choose what channels are available. Cable TV affords us many
  267. advantages, yet like all technologies it is a double edged sword. We
  268. need policies that better deal with these "monopolies", and which
  269. provide for true competition.
  270.  
  271. * Technology is encroaching more and more into our everyday life, and
  272. abusing our privacy along the way. These issues hit all of us when
  273. applying for credit, going to the doctor, applying for a job, and even
  274. when making an 800 toll-free phone call. For example, there are
  275. companies providing computers to doctors' offices in exchange for access
  276. to all of their records. These problems are affecting everyone, and are
  277. not esoteric technological issues. I am committed to protecting our
  278. privacy at home and on the job.
  279.  
  280. * The computer networks criss-crossing our country are the highways of
  281. tomorrow. These networks are an 'online electronic frontier' connecting
  282. such diverse groups as a Native American Tribal school with an M.I.T.
  283. mathematics class. The electronic frontier is a new publishing medium,
  284. and a new 'place' of assembly raising many issues of privacy and rights
  285. of free speech. Online we can achieve what political consultants want: a
  286. way to get a message to many people. A key element of being online is
  287. that the people can also get their message TO their representatives.
  288. This technology affords us the opportunity to discuss issues with our
  289. representatives.
  290.  
  291. * We need ready access to information, especially flowing to and from
  292. our government at all levels. Information is power, and we the people
  293. must recapture the power that should be ours.

  313. Congressional Candidate Glenn Tenney Talks a Bit About Himself
  314.  
  315. MARCH 6, 1992, SAN MATEO, CALIFORNIA: I've never had a desire to be a
  316. career politician. Apparently, few politicians in recent times have
  317. carried a vision to Washington. That's why I have decided to act on my
  318. vision of our country's future in the twenty- first century by working
  319. with you, as your representative in Washington.
  320.  
  321. My vision sees an information revolution that has already started and
  322. will be as dramatic as was the industrial revolution. We need
  323. legislators who can truly understand future technologies and how to use
  324. them to our advantage instead of having the technologies abuse us. I
  325. take our future and my campaign seriously. I am compelled to help
  326. prepare our country for the next century even if that means becoming an
  327. elected official and putting my career on hold.
  328.  
  329. I've been professionally involved in various aspects of technologies
  330. (software and hardware) having begun operating system and compiler
  331. design some 28 years ago, even before graduating high school. I've been
  332. "online" since then, being "hand's on" with technology having designed
  333. and implemented many small and large systems as well as having
  334. programmed on dozens of systems. I've also researched and written about
  335. technology, and about people's fears of technology.
  336.  
  337. I've been self-employed (or a "high-tech entrepreneur", depending on how
  338. you want to view it) since I formed my own company in 1974. Since then
  339. I've been involved in a few Silicon Valley high-tech startups including
  340. the very beginning of the personal computer industry, as well as chip
  341. designs and a few others.
  342.  
  343. My company has been a "mom and pop" venture since Susan and I were
  344. married in 1976. I have two children and three step- children. I grew up
  345. in the Chicago area and moved to San Mateo county in 1972, raising our
  346. children in San Mateo since 1976. I turned 43 years old the day after I
  347. announced my candidacy.
  348.

  398.         Changed procedures to get an echomail conference add to
  399. the backbone.

  402.         In an effort to make adding a conference to the backbone
  403. both easier and more in the open the following procedures are
  404. now put into place.  These modify slightly the procedures listed
  405. in BOP 1.03.
  406.  
  407.         To get a new conference added to backbone distribution
  408. the following steps must be followed.
  409.  
  410.         I.  The moderator of the conference must place a message
  411. in the ZEC conference addressed to: Backbone
  412.  
  413.                 a.  Please note any netmail requests will be
  414. ignored. Only messages placed in the ZEC conference will be
  415. considered valid requests.

  420.                 b.  The message must include either the
  421. appropriate line from your areas.bbs or a list of fidonet
  422. addresses that currently receive the conference.  (If a list of
  423. nodes is included it would be more accurate to gather this from
  424. originating messages in the conference than from $eenbys or path
  425. lines) This is to demonstrate wide spread interest in your
  426. conference and your current distribution.
  427.  
  428.                 c.  The rest of the message should just be a
  429. request to have the message added to backbone distribution. (A
  430. sample message follows).
  431.  
  432.         II.  The same time the request message is posted a copy
  433. of the Elist confirmation message (minus password of course)
  434. should also be posted.  If your conference has been in the Elist
  435. for some time and the listing is current, then just post the
  436. Elist section that covers your conference.  (In other words cut
  437. and paste a message made up of the elist listing)  If your
  438. conference is not currently Elisted or if you have not received
  439. a confirmation message... DO NOT post a request message.
  440.  
  441.         Any request message that does not have the required
  442. Elist message as outlined above will not be considered a valid
  443. request and will be ignored.
  444.  
  445.         III.  Two RECs must also request that the conference be
  446. added.  Those requests will also be posted in the ZEC
  447. conference.  Please note.... The request to the RECs MUST come
  448. from Nodes within their regions asking to have the conference
  449. added to the backbone.  Those requests must be via netmail to
  450. the REC or in a regional sysop echo to the REC and most RECs
  451. require that requests come from at least two different nets.
  452. Moderators please DO NOT send messages to the RECs as they will
  453. probably be ignored.  The requests must come from nodes within
  454. their regions.
  455.  
  456.         Once the above requirements have been met the conference
  457. will be added with the next Fidonet.NA.  An REC (currently Dan
  458. Buda) will monitor the ZEC conference and track all messages
  459. addressed to Backbone.  That REC will maintain Fidostat.NA
  460. tracking the requirements for each requested conference.
  461. Fidostat.NA will be posted in the ZEC conference each Friday.

  584. Currently I am posting the diary of Lydia Allen Rudd, a woman who
  585. crossed the Oregon Trail in 1852.  Here is a recent entry:

  590. the open prarie without any wood  Mary and myself collected some dry
  591. weeds and grass and made a little fire and cooked some meat and the
  592. last of our supply of eggs with these and some hard bread with water
  593. we made our supper.

  610. In the event you have not checked your "in" box for the new and
  611. improved FiDOSTAT.NA, (or even if you have) I thought I would be
  612. sure and mention here in the Snooze that the Sierra Club Echo is
  613. now being moved around by the Fidonet Backbone!
  614.  
  615. I would like to publicly thank Mike Ernst of 3812/215 (my long
  616. distance EC) for making the echo available to those brave souls
  617. who have made special trips to Texas to pick up the echo.  It is
  618. not every echomail hub who is willing to be the pickup point of
  619. any and all who send him netmail.

  621. While the Sierra Club Echo (SIERRAN) may be geared for members and
  622. friends of the Sierra Club, anyone sharing a desire to change our
  623. environment for the better is more than welcome!
